Socket set

A socket set, also known as a ratchet set, is a collection of different sockets and accessories used to tighten or loosen nuts and bolts. A set usually consists of:

One or more ratchets: The ratchet is a hand tool with a mechanism that allows you to tighten or loosen nuts and bolts with minimal effort. The ratchet has a reversing mechanism so you can both tighten and loosen.
Sockets: The sockets fit onto the ratchet and are interchangeable. They are available in different sizes. The most common sizes are 6 mm to 24 mm for metric bolts and 3/16 inch to 1 inch for imperial bolts.
Extensions: Extensions are used to lengthen the ratchet, allowing you to reach difficult areas. They are available in various lengths.
Universal joint: A universal joint is an adapter that allows you to work at an angle without removing the ratchet.

You can also expand your toolset with sets of special sockets such as sump plug sockets or spark plug sockets.

Socket set buying guide

It is wise to buy a good quality socket set. The more precise sizing and better materials protect against wear. If you are buying a socket set for the first time, you can buy a cheaper set to try out which sockets you use the most.

Some sets come with additional accessories such as spark plug sockets, Allen keys and bit sockets. Consider what you need. Socket sets often come in a handy case or storage box.
