Why do headlights become dull?

In most cars, the headlight lenses are made of a transparent plastic with a coating layer over it. Unfortunately, it is therefore almost impossible to prevent the headlights from discolouring, becoming dull or scratching over time. When installing the new lens, ensure a good seal between the lens and the unit so that the headlamp remains watertight.
