Does your car have a timing chain? Then that brings a number of advantages. In principle, a distribution chain lasts a long time and is maintenance-free. However, sometimes things go wrong with the chain. The chain can stretch or break. It is therefore important that you regularly check whether there is still sufficient voltage. It is very important for the timing that the chain is good and tight. This timing refers to the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves. If there is not enough voltage, the motor will perform worse. Manufacturers do not give an official interval for replacing timing chains, but this does not mean that they never need to be replaced. Some need to be replaced after 100,000 km, while others last more than 200,000 km.

Replace timing chain

A chain may need to be replaced because it is defective or because it has had its day. You can recognize a worn timing chain by a number of points. A stretched chain will make a clearly present rattling or ticking sound. This shows that the chain has become slack. It will then jump a number of teeth causing a ticking or rattling sound. In some cases, a stretched chain will tap against the housing. This can also cause the chain tensioners and guides to malfunction, for example. If you hear a ticking or rattling sound, it may be that the chain needs to be replaced. Replacing a timing chain is a challenging job, but with a little skill you can do it yourself.
