Timing chain

Where a belt is made of a strong rubber, a timing chain is made of high quality metal with links that are connected together. This can actually be compared to a regular bicycle chain. Thanks to the material, a chain is more durable than a belt and needs to be replaced less often. But what exactly is the function? The chain provides the mechanical connection between the crankshaft and the camshaft. The camshaft is driven by the crankshaft via the chain. The camshaft then again drives the intake and exhaust valves. Without a belt or chain, the engine cannot run as the valves will not open or close at the correct time.

Timing chain maintenance

However, sometimes things go wrong with the chain. The chain can stretch or break. It is therefore important that you regularly check whether there is still sufficient voltage. If there is not enough voltage, the motor will perform worse. Manufacturers do not give an official interval for replacing timing chains, but this does not mean that they never need to be replaced. Some need to be replaced after 100,000 km, while others last more than 200,000 km.

A stretched chain will make a clearly present rattling or ticking sound. This shows that the chain has become slack. It will then jump a number of teeth causing a ticking or rattling sound.
