A stretched chain will make a clearly present rattling or ticking sound. This shows that the chain has become slack. It will then jump a number of teeth causing a ticking or rattling sound. In some cases, a stretched chain will tap against the housing. This can also cause the chain tensioners and guides to malfunction, for example. If you hear a ticking or rattling sound, it may be that the chain needs to be replaced. Replacing a timing chain is a challenging job, but with a little skill you can do it yourself.
