Crankshaft pulley is worn

In general, the crankshaft pulley is not susceptible to wear. However, it can happen that the pulley breaks, for example as a result of a broken drive belt or overheating. With regular maintenance, this can often be avoided.

If your crankshaft pulley does break, many systems will experience problems. The symptoms you may notice are:

The air conditioning no longer works: The air conditioning system in your car works on the basis of pressure. The air conditioning compressor that builds up this pressure is driven by the timing belt.

Power steering is lost: The power steering is also under pressure to make steering lighter. This pump is also driven by the timing belt, and therefore the crankshaft pulley.

The battery is flat: The alternator charges your car battery. This is done, just like a small dynamo on a bicycle, by turning the alternator. In this case, this is done via the timing belt.

The engine overheats: The engine block is cooled by circulating coolant. This system is also driven by the crankshaft pulley.

Other problems you may notice include vibrations from the engine, an engine that runs erratically when stationary, or a squeaking or chattering noise from the engine due to the belt tension being inconsistent.

These problems can also indicate other defects, such as a worn out timing belt. If you have one or more of the above problems, it is important to first check whether the timing belt isn't stretched out. You can also measure the alternator and car battery and check the coolant level. If this does not offer the solution, there is a good chance that your crankshaft pulley is worn or has become unbalanced.

Replacing the crankshaft pulley

Generally, it is not difficult to replace the crankshaft pulley, after all, it is located on the outside of the engine. However, depending on your car, it can be difficult to reach. Always consult a repair manual for your car if you want to repair or replace something, and make sure you work safely.
