Camshaft seal

Between the camshaft and cylinder head sits a camshaft oil seal. This component is responsible for sealing between the camshaft or camshafts and the cylinder head. These seals are usually made of rubber, so they are resistant to the movement of the camshaft. Over time, the rubber can dry out and crack. It is then important that you replace the camshaft oil seal. A leaking seal can cause engine oil to get onto the timing belt or V-belt. This can cause the belt to crack. A cracked or damaged belt results in high installation costs. Therefore, replace the camshaft oil seal immediately!

In addition, oil leakage is very bad for the engine. Engine oil protects the internal components from friction. Driving with a defective camshaft oil seal is therefore not recommended.

Replacing the camshaft oil seal

1. Use a car jack to jack the car up. Stabilise the car with axle stands so that you can work safely under the car.

2. Drain the engine oil and collect it in a drain pan.

3. Remove the timing belt and camshaft sprockets.

4. You can now remove the camshaft oil seal.

5. Clean the area where the new seal is to be installed. For example, use brake cleaner for this.

6. Apply a thin layer of sealant to the new seal before installing this part.

7. Replace the camshaft sprockets and timing belt.

8. Refill the engine with engine oil and lower the vehicle.
