The pressure in the turbocharger is measured by the boost pressure sensor, also known as the MAP sensor. If the pressure gets too high, this sensor sends a signal to the ECU. This then instructs the boost pressure control valve to reduce the pressure. The boost pressure control valve redirects part of the airflow, which reduces the pressure.

Excessively high boost pressure can be harmful to the engine and turbocharger components. It can lead to excessive strain, wear and tear, and even overheating. The boost pressure control valve has a control valve that restricts the airflow. When the boost pressure gets too high, the control valve partially closes to reduce the airflow. This lowers the pressure going to the engine.

A faulty boost pressure control valve can therefore have disastrous consequences. As a result, the turbocharger will not function if it is broken. A warning light will then appear on the dashboard. This pressure forces more air into the engine, allowing it to burn more fuel and produce more power. This process generates more exhaust gases. If this cycle continues unchecked, the turbocharger will spin too fast, causing damage. The turbocharger wastegate prevents this by ensuring the pressure doesn't become excessive.
