Valve lifter

The valve lifters are mounted on the camshaft. Each cylinder has one or two valve lifters. The camshaft is driven by the engine. This allows the cams, the valve lifters, to push the valves open at the right moment.

Due to wear and tear, clearance between the valves and the cylinders can occur in older engines. This prevents the valves from being pushed open completely. If this happens, the valve clearance must be adjusted. Modern cars solve this by using hydraulic valve lifters, which are filled with oil to absorb the clearance. However, hydraulic valve lifters also eventually break down due to wear and tear.

If the valve lifters are worn, this is often clearly audible by a ticking sound from the engine. You will notice this especially when starting the engine. If the play gets worse, the engine power will eventually decrease, fuel consumption will increase and even damage to the engine may occur. So do not wait too long with repairs if you think the valve lifters are broken. The cost of replacing valve lifters varies greatly depending on the make and model of the car. This depends on the location of the camshaft and how easily it can be removed.

Valve lifter
