Brake light switch broken

When the brake light switch is broken, you can recognize it by a number of symptoms. The first and most common symptom is the brake lights not turning on when braking. When the brake light switch is broken, it can no longer activate the brake lights. When you check the brake lights and they all don't come on, it's unlikely that the lights broke at the same time. In the case of two failing brake lights, a brake light switch failure is likely. Another symptom is the brake lights staying on. A faulty switch can cause a short circuit in the system, causing the brake lights to remain on even without braking. When the brake lights stay on, the battery can also be discharged faster and the brake lights will fail faster.

Replace brake light switch

Replacing a faulty brake light switch is important for your safety. Replacing it yourself is inexpensive and you can do it yourself. Follow these steps to replace the switch:

1. Disconnect the car battery. To turn off the electrical circuit in the car, you will have to remove the negative lead from the battery;

2. Locate the brake light switch. The switch is often located above the brake pedal, under the dashboard. If you can't find the switch, you can consult the car's manual;

3. Remove the wiring from the switch. The wiring is usually attached with a clip;

4. Loosen the switch nuts to remove it;

5. Install the new switch. Note that you may need to depress the brake pedal to properly position the switch;

6. Reconnect the wiring and the car battery;

7. Check whether the brake lights function properly again.
